Going Postal: A psychoanalytic reading of social media and the death drive

"If the punchy, claustrophobic anti-sociality of platforms in the early lockdown suggested a really black perspective into the future, the Action for Black Lives block uprising of the late spring thought like its joyous opposite—another where platforms were giving an answer to and being structured by the functions on a lawn, rather than these activities being organized by and designed to the demands of the platforms. This is anything value our time and loyalty, something that exceeded our compulsion to create, something that—for an instant, at least—the Twittering Machine couldn't swallow.

Not that it wasn't trying. As people in the roads toppled statues and fought authorities, people on the tools altered and refashioned the uprising from a street motion to an object for the consumption and representation of the Twittering Machine. That which was occurring off-line would have to be accounted for, explained, evaluated, and processed. Didactic story-lectures and photographs of effectively stocked antiracist bookshelves appeared on Instagram. On Facebook, the usual pundits and pedants sprang up demanding explanations for every single motto and justifications for each and every action. In these matter trolls and response men, Seymour's chronophage was literalized. The cultural industry does not only eat our time with countless stimulus and algorithmic scrolling; it eats our time by creating and marketing individuals who exist only to be told, visitors to whom the entire world has been developed anew each morning, people for whom every settled sociological, scientific, and political debate of modernity must be rehashed, rewritten, and re-accounted, this time around using their participation.

These folks, making use of their just-asking questions and vapid start letters, are dullards and bores, pettifoggers and casuists, cowards and dissemblers, time-wasters of the worst sort. But Seymour's guide implies anything worse about people, their Facebook and Facebook interlocutors: That we need to waste our time. That, nevertheless much we would complain, we find pleasure in countless, rounded argument. That individuals get some kind of happiness from boring debates about "free speech" and "stop culture." That people seek oblivion in discourse. In the machine-flow atemporality of social media, this appears like no good crime. If time is an endless resource, why don't you invest a few decades of it with a couple New York Times op-ed columnists, repairing each of Western believed from first principles? But political and financial and immunological crises stack on one another in sequence, around the background roar of ecological collapse. Time isn't infinite. Nothing of us are able to afford to invest what is left of it dallying with the ridiculous and bland."
